Premiered by Saffron Sonada at Her Endangered Melody fundraising concert, Salford, 28th March, 2025.  Performed by Craig Ogden, Copped Hall, 26th July, 2025.

Inspired by ancient Neolithic standing stones, These Cold Stones evokes the quiet solitude of these enigmatic monuments under the cover of night.

The music begins with a chilly, atmospheric melody.  Punctuated by stark, bare chords, it captures the otherworldly stillness of the stones beneath the dark sky.

The moon rises, and the music transitions into a mysterious triple-time section, suggesting whispers of ancient secrets hidden within the stones.

Harmonics mark the peppering of stars appearing in the dark sky, and gradually, the heavens come alive with shooting stars and bursts of cosmic brilliance.

The syncopated celestial fireworks of the Northern Lights intensify until the cosmic energy crashes down through a series of darkening chords, and the display is over.

The sky grows quieter once more, and the main theme returns in ethereal harmonics, until the stars disappear, and finally, the first light of dawn breaks.  The sun rises over the empty moor.
